RACE ENTRY

HOW DO I ENTER THE EVENT?

Simply choose the entry type you would like to do and sign up. Entries are subject to availability. There are a number of distances to choose from and also team, corporate and charity options too. Click here to take a look at the options and see which suits you best.

THE RACE CATEGORY I WANT TO ENTER ISN'T APPEARING ON THE APPLICATION FORM?

Please note that if a category doesn’t appear on the application form it means that we have sold out of that particular entry. This happens automatically when we reach our capacity levels and we cannot make further amendments.

If general entries have closed you can still enter through one of our Official Charities. Contact your chosen charity and they will give you a PIN to enter the event.

CAN I REQUEST TO BE PUT INTO A PARTICULAR WAVE / START TIME?

Unfortunately not. With 13,000 triathletes involved over the weekend we are unable to accommodate individual requests. Your race day and start time is determined by the category you’ve entered and will be confirmed on our website approximately 2 weeks before the event.

WHAT ARE THE AGE RESTRICTIONS FOR COMPETING?

You must be 17 years old or over by the end of the year the event is taking place in order to compete in the general adult races. Last year our eldest competitor was 74 years old – this is an event for everyone!

If you are 15/16 years old we have youth events available for you to compete in. Please note these races are elite, draft legal races and are not suitable for beginners. Youth athletes should be experienced in open water swimming and have previously raced drafting on the bike. It is strongly advised that athletes who are competitive swimmers or runners still need to show some experience of triathlon and not just the single sports.

CAN I RACE WITH FRIENDS / FAMILY?

Yes. In order to do so you will firstly need to make sure you and your friends/family enter the same category e.g. Mixed Individual Olympic Distance on the same day. Secondly, you will need to make sure you enter the same code word on your application form. This information will allow us to group you together. Multiple words should consist of no spaces e.g. ‘first time triathletes’ and be unique and original. Please make sure you all use the same code word.

HOW DO I KNOW I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE RACE?

You should have received a confirmation email upon entering the event.

Note - you may not be receiving any emails from us even if you are entered. This can be for numerous reasons:

- You provided us with an incorrect or out of date email address

- The emails are being directed into your junk folder

- Our emails are being rejected by your email server

To avoid this, please add 'no-reply@thelondontriathlon.com' and 'info@thelondontriathlon.com' to your address book - Learn how.

If you have not received confirmation of your payment you are not entered!

If you have been charged the entry fee but have not received any emails from us then please contact us (link to contact us page). If you are concerned that you aren't entered to the race please do not leave it until the last minute to query it.

I MISSED OUT ON SECURING A PLACE. IS THERE A WAITING LIST / CANCELLATION POLICY?

Please note that we don’t operate a reserve/cancellation list as we already take into account the usual drop-out rate prior to the event. The only remaining way of obtaining places in this case is through our Official Charities. Contact your chosen charity and they will give you a PIN to enter the event.

SWIM QUESTIONS

DO I NEED A WETSUIT?

Yes. Wetsuits are compulsory for this triathlon for the safety of our participants. Your wetsuit will keep you warm and improve your swimming speed; a wetsuit provides you with extra buoyancy and the higher you are the faster you swim. It will aid your swim immensely.

You can purchase a wetsuit from our Official Swim Partner, Zone3.

Alternatively, you can hire a wetsuit for the triathlon season for only £65 (and no deposit) from www.wetsuithire.co.uk. Don’t forget to put your name in it or make a note of the hire number!

CAN I USE MY SURFING OR SHORTIE WETSUIT?

Any neoprene full body wetsuit is suitable. This means you can wear a wetsuit that covers your arms to the elbows and legs to the knees. However, we strongly recommend that you wear full length wetsuits. Sleeveless wetsuits are not permitted.

Non-triathlon wetsuits are not designed to be flexible around the arms and shoulders and do not fit like a second skin so will scoop up an awful lot of water. This will slow you down. A triathlon wetsuit is designed for swimming. Practising in a wetsuit in the weeks prior to the race is very important and will allay any fears you may have.

DO I NEED SWIM GOGGLES?

Any open water swimming requires goggles. Most open water swimmers would use a lightly tinted or persimmon coloured lens, which will make everything look clearer and crisper. Prescription goggles are also acceptable. You can purchase a wetsuit from our Official Swim Partner, Zone3.

DO I NEED A SWIM CAP?

You will be issued a swim cap at the Swim Assembly point on race day and this must be worn for safety reasons. A swimmer is easier to see in the water if they're wearing a swim cap.

WHAT DO I WEAR UNDERNEATH MY WETSUIT?

You should wear whatever you will complete the rest of the race in. This way, when you strip off your wetsuit after the swim your race kit is already on underneath. Remember nudity in the transition area is not allowed, so wear something! You can race in any clothing you feel comfortable in but triathlon specific clothing is designed for swimming, biking and running. It dries quickly, provides sufficient padding and will prevent chaffing in certain areas. TRI UK, our official retailers sell reasonably priced triathlon clothing.

CAN I USE ANY STROKE DURING THE SWIM?

Backstroke is not allowed as this can easily be confused with the distress signal. We recommend that you try to swim front crawl but breaststroke is also permitted.

HOW DO I KNOW THE WATER IS SAFE TO SWIM IN?

We conduct numerous tests, right up to the race day itself, to ensure that the water is safe to swim in.

WHAT SAFETY MEASURES ARE IN PLACE?

The Swim Safety team are very experienced. Should you get into difficulty, lie on your back and raise one arm; a canoe will then escort you to safety. The buoyancy of your wetsuit will help so don’t panic. We have numerous safety canoes and rescue power boats if we need to bring anyone to the dockside.

BIKE QUESTIONS

CAN I USE A MOUNTAIN BIKE?

Yes. Please refer to the BTF website for further details on BTF approved bikes.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF USING A ROAD BIKE?

It will allow you to cycle faster on the roads as the tyres are smoother and provide less resistance. The frame is also lighter, reducing the effort required, and the drop handlebars allow you a more aerodynamic position.

Visit official retailer triuk.com for advice, they’re open 7 days a week.

CAN I USE TRI BARS?

Yes but all tri bars (and handlebars) must be plugged and secure. There is no requirement for them to be shorter than the brake levers, unless racing in the elite races.

DOES MY HELMET MEET SAFETY STANDARDS?

Your helmet will pass the safety inspection as long as it has no cracks in it, has no damage to it and bears a CE & EU safety mark inside it. The strap must also be in good working order.

Visit official retailer triuk.com for advice, they’re open 7 days a week.

WHEN DO I RACK MY BIKE?

You can only rack your bike on the day of your race. We highly recommend arriving at the ExCeL Centre 90 minutes before your allocated start time.

IS THERE WATER AVAILABLE ON THE BIKE COURSE?

There will be no water stations on the bike course - it is your responsibility to ensure that you have enough fluid to keep yourself hydrated on the bike leg. There will be water stations located at the swim exit and on the run course.

Visit official retailer triuk.com for advice, they’re open 7 days a week.

RUN QUESTIONS

IS THE COURSE FLAT?

The run course is predominately flat. There is one incline as runners return to the ExCel Centre but nothing too strenuous!

SHOULD I WEAR SPECIFIC RUNNING TRAINERS?

Yes - it will make your race experience more enjoyable. We do recommend you get properly fitted to ensure that they fit properly and do not hurt your feet. Aspiring triathletes should use elastic laces which help save a lot of time in transition. We highly recommend you do not wear brand new trainers on race day.

IS THERE WATER AVAILABLE ON THE RUN COURSE?

There will be numerous water stations on the run course. Grab a cup as you go past – please try to use the bins provided once you’ve finished your drink!

TRANSITION QUESTIONS

WHAT IS TRANSITION?

Transition is an area in the ExCel Centre where all competitors must rack their bike and leave a small bag of essentials for the swim and run. It is the area where you will be based for transition from swim to bike and bike to run.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO RACK MY BIKE?

Your bike racking time slot is dependent upon which wave of the day you have been allocated. You can only rack the day of your wave.

If there are no restrictions that apply to your wave, please rack your bike around 90 minutes before your start time. Any restrictions will be listed in the Race Information Guide.

WHAT CAN I LEAVE IN TRANSITION?

A small bag / box with your race kit inside. Whilst transition is fully secure, all belongings are left at owner’s risk. Please note that only you and your kit will be allowed into transition. This is a high security area and access will only be given to those wearing a wristband.

CAN I USE DECORATIONS (BALLOONS ETC.) TO INDICATE WHERE MY RACKING POSITION IS IN TRANSITION?

No. This is considered to give you an advantage over your fellow competitors and is against BTF rules. Making your equipment distinguishable in any way will be penalised and may lead to disqualification although we do recommend labelling your items with your name and race number so they can be easily identified post-race.

Make sure to make a mental note of the row your bike is racked and approximately how far down. This will save you time during transition.

RESIDENT QUESTIONS

I NEED TO MAKE A JOURNEY ON THE WEEKEND OF THE EVENT - CAN YOU HELP?

Use web services such as TFL's journey planner to find the best route to the venue on race weekend. This will take into account road closures caused by the event.

Please contact us for further details on info@thelondontriathlon.com or call us on 0208 233 5900 between 12pm - 2pm, Monday to Thursday.

WHICH ROADS WILL BE CLOSED DURING THE EVENT?

Please contact us for further details on info@thelondontriathlon.com or call us on 0208 233 5900 between 12pm - 2pm, Monday to Thursday.

HOW WILL THE ROADS BE CLOSED?

Road will be closed in conjunction with the local council and police using cones, barriers and traffic management personnel, supplemented by motor cycle marshals. This will create a traffic free environment for the entire event. Please note this is not what is called a ‘rolling road closure’ where motorcycles travel ahead of the event and stop traffic that is already on the route for a short period of time to allow participants past.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN EMERGENCY?

Please be advised that road closures do not affect the blue light services, and a member of each will be sat with us in Race Control during the event weekend so we can respond quickly and efficiently to any emergency call.
